Hi Dave,
Normally it is only Pied wagtails that nest in urban environments.
Yellow wagtails are birds of damp meadows and grazing marsh, Grey wagtails
usually nest along streams and sometimes ponds.
Both grey and pied nest in holes, so pipes, missing bricks, cracks in
cliffs, piles of rocks and the occasional flowerpot will do.
If it is either a grey or yellow wagtail it will be Grey.
The best way to identify them is the colour of the back, if it is grey its a
grey, if it is greenish then its yellow.
Cheers
Ian Standivan

Subject: [Adastra] yellow or gray wagtail ?

Hi,
For some time there have been some wagtails in my neighbours garden. I have
been trying to get a good enough sighting of them to determine weather they
are yellow wagtails or gray wagtail, but have fail after weeks of trying.
The gray wagtail is on Long list of Globally Threatened/Declining Species
The yellow wagtail is Red Data Book of Birds and also on the Long list of
Globally Threatened/Declining Species
So I would like to work out witch one it is. Would anyone be able to tell by
looking at a photo of the nest?
It currently has 5 eggs in it. It has made two previous aborted attempts at
nesting. One of witch had 3 eggs in the nest.
The nest is very close to my neighbours back door so the bird gets scared
off every time he opens the door. So I do not want to go round there
scarring it off the nest any more than it already is. Hence my problem.
It is nesting in a flower pot very close to the ground if that helps.
Every one else here is calling it a yellow wagtail, but I personally am
thinking it is a gray.

Thanks Dave
